Tips for First-Time Home Buyers

Buying your first home can be an exciting but overwhelming process. From the initial search to receiving your keys on closing day, there are many steps involved in the home buying process. If chosen as your agent, I will be here to help each and every step of the way. In the meantime, these tips may answer some questions or ease your concerns as you begin this exciting journey!

Understand Your Financials

It is wise to check your credit score and get pre-approved or pre-qualified before you begin your home search process. This helps you get a better picture of your financial situation so you can understand how much home you can afford. From there, create a budget to help you track what you can afford and any other expenses you may have to incur after buying a home, such as appliance purchases or landscaping needs.

Be prepared for Closing Costs

Closing costs are the charges and fees paid when a home purchase is finalized. Both buyers and sellers are typically responsible for paying closing costs to the various service providers who contribute to the transaction, including agents, attorneys, the title company and more. This can be calculated into your budget!

Get Familiar With the Process

Understand the various steps and terms related to the home buying process, including due diligence, appraisal, inspection, closing costs and many more. For your convenience, there is a buyers’ guide on my website that can walk you through the basics of the process from beginning to end.

Set Your Expectations

Be prepared for what might be an emotional process, as making a significant financial decision like this can be overwhelming (although equally exciting!). Before you begin, set realistic expectations for the journey ahead.

Determine Your Must-Haves (and Nice-to-Haves)

Make a list of the features and details you want, including the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, square footage, style, and various amenities. Keep in mind that location is often one of the most important factors to consider, as you can make upgrades to a house but you cannot move it. Also make a list for nice-to-haves, consisting of things you don’t absolutely need but would like to have in a home.

Attend Open Houses

Take advantage of open houses happening in your desired neighborhood. Seeing homes in person helps you understand what you want in your first home.
