5 Tips for House Hunting During Winter
If you’ve been thinking about looking for a new home, we have great news. Winter is a fantastic time to buy! But before you start searching, it’s important to realize that homes may look a little different in December than in July. Here are a few tips you should keep in mind as you begin your house hunting journey this season:
1. Keep an Open Mind. While curb appeal definitely matters, it’s important to remember as you look at homes in the winter that their landscaping may be lacking. Don’t let this deter you! Pay less attention to how the yard looks and imagine how it could look in the warmer seasons.
2. Take a Good Look at the Heating Systems. As you look at properties this winter, you have a unique opportunity to see each home’s heating systems in action. Try to leave your coat at the front door, so you can get a good feeling for how warm the house stays when it’s cold outside.
3. Picture Each Home in All Seasons. Make sure you are considering each part of a home and how it may feel during the spring or summer. While an open, and well-lit room may feel like the perfect living space in December, it could turn into a sauna in June or July.
4. Don’t Let the Winter Weather Distract You. Snow can turn any home into a magical winter wonderland – but don’t let that distract you! Snow could be covering serious issues throughout the property including a bad roof, cracked pavement, a crumbling foundation and more. While a home inspection is always a good idea, it is especially necessary during wintertime.
5. Don’t Be Afraid to Make an Offer. If you see a home you love, don’t be afraid to take a leap of faith and make an offer. During winter there are often less homes on the market than usual, so if you’ve found one you love — make sure it doesn’t slip away!
